TASHKENT, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Uzbekistan has acceded to the “Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies,” said the press service of the Uzbek Senate in a statement on Thursday.
At one of its plenary sessions, the Uzbek Senate adopted the Law “on the Accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies,” according to the statement.
“The ratification of the treaty will open up opportunities for Uzbekistan to explore and use space, have free access to all areas of outer space and celestial bodies, and participate in international space projects, resource exchange, and knowledge sharing,” the Senate said.
Such an approach aims at establishing and strengthening cooperative relations with developed countries on the international stage, conducting space activities in consideration of national interests under international law, the statement said.
The Senate stressed that the necessity today for Uzbekistan to become a member of international organizations and to adopt or accede to documents based on international law has become one of the pressing issues.
The “Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies,” also known as the Outer Space Treaty, entered into force in 1967. ■
