Trooper severely injured after being hit by pickup truck in Upstate NY, driver in custody

Colonie, N.Y. — A New York State trooper was severely injured after being hit by a pickup truck on Saturday, troopers said.
The trooper stopped a driver around 12:28 p.m. on I-87 (Northway) southbound just before the exit 6-7 off-ramp in Colonie, said Trooper Stephanie L. O’Neil, a spokesperson for the state police.
Due to a traffic law violation the vehicle needed to be towed, O’Neil said. A tow truck arrived and the trooper and tow truck operator were outside their vehicles when a passing pick-up truck hit them both, she said.
The tow truck operator had minor injuries and was transported to be evaluated, she said. The trooper sustained severe injuries and is still being evaluated at Albany Medical Center, she said.
The driver of the pickup truck stopped and called 911, along with multiple witnesses, she said. The driver is in custody, she said.
